The Dalmore story began in 1839 with Alexander Matheson, who lived in the Highlands of Northern Scotland. Matheson found the rich peat and pure water sources of the Highlands to be the makings of a perfect Scotch offering. He built a distillery in the area and produced small batches of his Single Highland Malt Scotch until 1886, when the Mackenzie family acquired his operation. When a member of the Mackenzie family risked his own life to save Scotland's ruler, King Alexander III, from a charging stag, the grateful king offered a token of his appreciation by bequeathing the stag to the Mackenzie family as a symbol of valor and courage. And more than 130 years later, the stag head still appears on every bottle of The Dalmore.

For well over a century, The Dalmore® has been made by hand, in the time-honored way, by a small band of local stillmen. The process is meticulous, and includes double distillations in copper pot-stills and patient aging in white oak and sherry wood casks.

Judicious selection and the precise balance of American white oak and Oloroso sherry wood delivers our most vibrant expression - robust yet elegant, with an aftertaste of brilliant complexity.

Our Master Distiller has selected our most intense whiskies, typically aged from 10 - 15 years, drawn exclusively from first fill oak casks for this unique expression. Aged in 40% American white oak and 60% Oloroso sherry wood. Once combined, the liquid is returned to the upstanding sherry butts for a further six months, delivering an enhanced, intense taste experience with a sweet finish.

Elegant and refined with hints of citrus and autumn fruits on the nose. Marmalade and Christmas cake tantalise the palate with subtle hints of roasted coffee and chocolate. This is followed with ripe oranges and lemon peel, giving delicate, zesty top notes.

Over the course of our history, The Dalmore's remarkable spirit has been filled to French wine barriques, Madeira drums, sherry butts from Jerez, Sicilian marsala barrels, port pipes from the Douro and bourbon barrels from Kentucky.

Each of these casks have now been united to create an exceptional malt where the individual characteristics of each cask work together to form a rich deep spirit.

Aged aromatic oloroso butts and Madeira drums provide citrus orange, spice and nuts, whilst redolent bourbon barrels deliver warm vanilla notes. Rich port and marsala woods adds hints of wild berries and fleshy plums, enhanced with red fruits from Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon barriques.

The Dalmore Distillery

The Dalmore distillery is located in Alness, about 20 miles north of Inverness, and is easily accessible by car. Located in the Highlands of Scotland, the distillery is situated in a breathtaking setting, with its rich bird life of oystercatchers, herons and sea birds.

Established in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, Dalmore Distillery sits on the banks of the Cromarty Firth, overlooking the rich and fertile Black Isle, the "big meadowland," from which it takes its name. The distillery was later purchased by the Mackenzie family in 1886, and the "twelve pointer stag" was introduced from their clan crest—a symbol that still adorns each and every bottle of The Dalmore to this day.

Clean, crystal-clear water from the nearby River Alness is used to create The Dalmore in the time-honored way, and the small band of stillmen who run the distillery all originate from a handful of local families. Years of experience, along with true craft and pride in their work, ensure that The Dalmore Whisky's unique character and quality never falter. It remains the classic Highland malt.

As is common with many scotch producers, expressions often change every few years. Due to some consumer issues concerning The Dalmore Cigar Malt (unbelievably, some consumers actually thought this single malt was aged in tobacco!), The Dalmore has renamed this expression to Gran Resera. It was also developed to be enjoyed with a fine cigar! Made in the same style as The Dalmore Cigar Malt, The Dalmore Gran Reserva now includes 60% Oloroso sherry wood and 40% American bourbon casks aging. If you enjoyed Cigar Malt, the Gran Reserva won’t disappoint!

I realize Dalmore is undergoing some sort of ownership change or re-branding. However, as an avid cigar smoker I and the 1000s of members of our group across the country are stunned to see that the cigar Malt will not be returning, at least in the beginning. Is that to be the case?

I recently had the opportunity to taste the new Dalmore core range - 12, 15 Year and the Gran Reserva. The 12 year is very nice with nutty flavors (which comes from the American oak); it's smooth while also have a nice kick of spice. You can certainly taste more sherry than the old version. The Gran Reserva is spicier, more sherry and pronounced flavors. Raisins? Nutty, woody. Dark chocolate is will greatly complement this fine scotch. I was thorougly impressed by the 15 year - notes of citrus - oranges? marmalade? Very, very flavorful and elegant. All were a treat.

I had the great oppt to try the new Dalmore scotch in a tasting in NYC. The new verison of Dalmore 12 seems to have more refined finish and absolutely zero heat. My favorites of the types tasted are in order of preference - King Alexander, Dalmore 15, Gran Reserve and Dalmore 12.

Dan - we are thrilled to hear you received a call from The Dalmore's Master Blender - Richard Paterson! And, you're right, the 12 year has changed. Per The Dalmore ..... " The Dalmore 12 is aged in the finest aged American Oak which accounts for 50% and the other 50% is matured in superb Matusalem Oloroso Sherry Cask; previously it was 70% / 30%. This creates a richer fuller flavor that makes it more profoundly rounded than its predecessor. Once the Dalmore is aged for 10 years in American Oak, 50% is then transferred into Matusalem Oloroso Sherry Cask Whisky where it matures for a minimum of 3 years. Then the 50% American Oak and the 50% Matusalem Oloroso Sherry Cask are married in Sherry Butts for a minimum of 6 months. A final “top dressing” of older whiskies to create a more mellow, harmonious and more mature character."

At the same time that I made the 12 Year Old Dalmore post above I sent a similar email to Dalmore. What followed within hours was an unbelieveable telephone call from the Dalmore Master Blender for the last 40 years, sincerely interested to discuss changes in their products. A summary would be that the amount of sherry barrel wood for the aging barrels for their 12 Year Old Dalmore has been increased from 30% to 50%, resulting in what was described as an "upgrade" of the product, with a slightly sweeter, more complex taste. It was a delightful conversation.

After Dalmore scotch was unavailable in the States for several months I was delighted to hear that it was again being delivered. Imagine my surprise and disappointment to find that the 12 Year Old product which had been a favorite of mine for many years has disappeared. In its place is a "new" 12 Year Old which is darker in color and has a much heavier, overpowering taste. It's as if the old Cigar Malt product has been substituted. It's interesting to note that on their current website the Cigar Malt is not listed. I would hope that the change is simply a marketing experiment that would be rapidly reversed.
Is there any possibility that the "old" 12 Year Old is available in the US with a different labeling?

I had the pleasure of tasting The Dalmore 1990 - Duncan Taylor & Co. Ltd. Cask #7329. Very enjoyable. Sweet, sugary raisins - plum pudding or raisin bread? Slightly nutty. Very flavorful, extremely long, potent and spicy finish. Wonderful.
